About
Bovis, a construction business in the United Kingdom, was established in London in 1885 by Charles William Bovis. The company changed ownership in 1908, acquired by Samuel Joseph and Sidney Gluckstein. In the 1920s, Bovis became a publicly traded construction company, developing an extensive retail clientele, notably with Marks & Spencer. The pioneering Bovis System contract, central to this relationship, paid the builder prime cost plus an agreed fee, with the client receiving construction savings. During World War II, Bovis contributed to British war efforts, constructing a munitions factory at Swynnerton and working on Mulberry Harbour units.
Post-war, Bovis re-engaged with the private sector, expanding into housing in the early 1950s. The acquisition of Frank Sanderson's business in 1967 led to the rapid expansion of Bovis Homes, establishing it as a major housebuilder by the early 1970s. Frank Sanderson served as Managing Director of Bovis Holdings from January 1970, becoming Chairman and Chief Executive in August 1972. Following housing acquisitions and an unsuccessful attempt to acquire P&O, Bovis encountered financial difficulties. P&O acquired Bovis in March 1974, making it a subsidiary. From 1985, under Sir Frank Lampl, the company evolved into an international contractor. Bovis Homes was subsequently demerged and floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1997.
In October 1999, Lendlease Corporation acquired Bovis from P&O for £285 million. Bovis then merged with Civil & Civic, a former Lendlease unit, and was rebranded as Bovis Lend Lease. This entity operated as the international project management and construction division of the Lendlease Group, managing projects globally across various sectors including commercial, retail, residential, government, industrial, and pharmaceutical. In 2011, Lendlease retired the Bovis Lend Lease brand, rebranding the division as Lendlease Project Management & Construction, a strategic business unit of the broader Lendlease Group.
A significant development occurred on January 1, 2025, when Lendlease announced a binding agreement for the sale of its UK Construction business to US private equity firm Atlas Holdings. The transaction concluded in March 2025, leading to the rebranding of the existing business as Bovis, thus reviving the original company name. This re-establishment of the Bovis brand in the UK marks 140 years since its founding in 1885. Now independently operated under Atlas Holdings, the company continues to deliver construction solutions as a trusted contractor and consulting service partner for public and private organizations across the UK.
The revived Bovis operates through a well-established nationwide platform, serving clients in both public and private sectors with strong technical expertise and relationships. Historically, Bovis has been involved in numerous UK construction projects, including the rebuilding of Regent Street in 1923, Lloyds of London's City Headquarters in 1980, and the first phase of Canary Wharf in 1991. More recently, projects include The Athlete's Village for the 2012 Olympics, extensive works in the Defence and Justice sectors, and 8 Bishopsgate in the City of London in 2024. David Cadiot leads the independently operated Bovis as Chief Executive Officer, supported by an executive leadership team of long-serving staff. The company aims to build upon its legacy by fostering enduring partnerships and delivering complex projects.
