About
AWW is an architectural, masterplanning, and interior design practice that focuses on creating spaces where people can thrive. The firm delivers buildings and environments designed to inspire individuals and transform communities through its work. As AWW enters its 51st year, the practice continues its operations with a focus on design excellence and innovation. The company aims for its work to have a positive legacy, considering how its projects will endure for future generations.
The practice operates with a philosophy centered on pushing boundaries, exceeding expectations, and leading the way in design. While embracing innovation, AWW consistently prioritizes "buildability" in its projects. The firm nurtures long-term collaborations with clients, partners, and stakeholders, viewing each project as a journey of possibility. AWW maintains a flexible, open, and responsive approach, actively listening at every stage of a project. The company became an Employee Owned Trust (EOT) on May 11, 2023, reflecting its commitment to being an equitable business that promotes responsible leadership and innovation. AWW is also committed to making an impact, placing people at the heart of its work to enhance quality of life and create sustainable and resilient communities.
AWW's expertise spans various sectors, including live, work, and learn environments, healthcare, and masterplanning. The company undertakes a wide range of projects, from large-scale entertainment destinations to office transformations. For instance, AWW is collaborating with YTL Live to develop Aviva Arena, which involves converting Bristol's historic aviation hangars into a 20,000-capacity entertainment venue. Additionally, the firm is transforming EMBARQ in Bristol, a 100,000 sqft, five-storey office building at Redcliff Quay, into flexible waterside workspace and a public piazza overlooking the floating Harbour and Bristol Bridge. The practice's commitment to quality and impact is evident in its goal to deliver architecture and interior design that aligns with its own ESG strategy, supporting clients and partners in achieving their environmental, social, and governance targets through good design and leadership.
AWW has significant experience in the student accommodation sector, creating living spaces designed with the occupants at the forefront. The firm's portfolio includes projects such as New Bridewell in Bristol, a student accommodation and mixed-use scheme that is part of the regeneration of the Nelson Street area. This development replaced a 1960s police headquarters with 500 new student bed spaces, along with commercial and retail opportunities on the ground floor. The design for New Bridewell incorporated low energy efficiency measures, anticipating approximately a 17% reduction in carbon from the development, and aimed to provide a high-quality student living offering in close proximity to the city centre. Another notable project is Queens Court in Reading, where AWW transformed the former Yell House office building into managed student accommodation, creating 400 new individual studios, double studios, quad apartments, and twodios, along with a new two-storey extension and external public amenity space. The company also received unanimous planning consent for a purpose-built student accommodation development as part of the Silverthorne Lane masterplan.
AWW integrates quality control into its operational framework through carefully honed protocols, including technical and peer review processes, expertise in Building Information Modelling (BIM), and accredited management systems. This structured approach ensures the smooth running and successful outcome of complex projects, while also providing the confidence to foster creativity. Communication is considered integral to project success, with responsive systems designed to provide flexibility, transparency, and optimal results. The firm has been recognized for its work, including being appointed to Lot 1 (Architectural Services – Buildings) of the new LHC CS1 – Consultancy Services Framework, which extends until 2027. AWW has also been listed in the AJ100 top 50 leading Architects in the UK. The practice welcomed Jamie Furse as its new Practice Director, following Mark Alkerstone’s eight years in the role, as the firm continues its long-standing presence in the industry.
