HG Construction has made significant strides in the UK purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) sector, recently securing Gateway 2 approval for two new developments. This milestone marks the contractor’s achievement of 15 approvals under the Building Safety Act across its living sector portfolio, showcasing its expertise in navigating safety regulations while expanding student housing options.
The Stour Road Phase 2 Development
One of the newly approved projects is the Stour Road Phase 2 in Hackney, where HG Construction will develop a 204-bed PBSA scheme for Firethorn. Situated on the former Broadwood Piano Factory site, this development will include 35% affordable student accommodation. Designed by Henley Halebrown, the project also features co-working study areas, common rooms, private dining spaces, a gym, and two roof terraces. Furthermore, it will incorporate approximately 1,400 sqm of affordable and incubator workspace, providing valuable resources for both residents and the local creative community.
Plymouth Grove in Manchester
The second approval pertains to Plymouth Grove in Manchester, where HG Construction is working on a 239-bed PBSA development for Far East Orchard and Woh Hup Group. This strategically located scheme is in proximity to the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University, making it an attractive option for students. The development will be operated by Homes for Students and will offer a variety of studio apartments, communal study areas, and social spaces, enhancing the living experience for its residents.
Expanding the Build to Rent Portfolio
In addition to its PBSA projects, HG Construction continues to advance its Build to Rent portfolio. The contractor has recently obtained Gateway 2 approval for the York Gate development in Bristol, which features 221 homes. This development underscores HG Construction’s commitment to delivering a diverse range of residential projects that meet the growing demand for high-quality living spaces.
