Portland Green Student Village

Portland Green Student Village is Abodus Student Living's flagship Newcastle scheme on Portland Road in Shieldfield, positioned on the edge of the Ouseburn Valley. Construction began in 2011 on a brownfield site that had stood vacant for over a decade, with phased delivery bringing the first 274 bedrooms online for the 2013/14 academic year.

The development was initially delivered speculatively by Metnor Construction without a university nominations agreement — phase one fully let within days of public release, with a Tesco Metro as the only commercial pre-let. Subsequent phases expanded capacity through 2015, 2017, and 2018. IDPartnership provided architectural design across buildings targeting BREEAM Very Good as a minimum, incorporating sedum green roofs and SUDS-compliant drainage. Engineering challenges included contaminated land remediation and ground improvement over former mine workings, coordinated with the Coal Authority.

The village now comprises multiple buildings — including Bryson Court, Marshall Court, Newton Court, and Turner Court — housing approximately 1,500 students annually, with total village capacity cited at up to 1,870 beds. Facilities include en-suite cluster rooms and studios, an on-site gym, study pods, laundry facilities, bike storage, and resident social programming. Both Newcastle University and Northumbria University are within walking distance.
