Unite Group has recently unveiled footage displaying the impressive construction progress at its Castle Leazes purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) project located in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. This initiative, developed in partnership with Newcastle University, aims to deliver accommodation for more than 2,000 students, strategically situated close to both the university campus and the vibrant city centre.
The Project Overview
Designed by Norr Architectural, the Castle Leazes development will feature a diverse range of room types along with a variety of communal spaces and high-quality amenities. These include social hubs, games rooms, study areas, and outdoor courtyards, all intended to create an engaging and supportive living environment. The first phase of this substantial project is scheduled to be ready for students by the commencement of the 2028/29 academic year.
Construction Milestones
The main contractor, Bowmer + Kirkland, commenced construction in April 2026. Currently, the stairwell and lift cores of the first of two buildings have been completed, and the structural steelwork is progressing to establish the framework, preparing for the installation of concrete floors.
Planning and Economic Impact
Planning permission for Castle Leazes was granted by Newcastle City Council in May 2025, shortly followed by the acquisition of a Gateway 2 approval from the Building Safety Regulator for the ambitious £274 million scheme. This project aims to replace the outdated 1960s accommodation, which previously housed 1,250 bedrooms, with a modern facility offering 2,009 student rooms. The Planning Committee of Newcastle City Council noted that this development is poised to provide substantial benefits to the local economy and job market, while also enhancing the university’s financial stability and attractiveness to prospective students.
Sustainability and Community Focus
Key aspects of the approved plans centre around the construction of energy-efficient buildings with sustainability being a core consideration. The accommodation will cater to a broad spectrum of student needs with various room types and will include expanded communal areas designed to foster a sense of community among residents.
