Dominus has recently shared exciting footage of its 65 Crutched Friars purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) project situated in the heart of the City of London, which is being constructed by McAleer & Rushe. Following the planning approval granted in February 2024, the contractor was appointed shortly thereafter in March of the same year. The project reached a significant milestone in February 2026 when McAleer & Rushe celebrated the topping out of the development. With the concrete frame completed earlier that year, the installation of the unitised façade has progressed beyond level 14, and internal fit-out work is currently underway across multiple floors in anticipation of the building’s completion next year.
The Vision for 65 Crutched Friars
Standing at 21 storeys, 65 Crutched Friars is designed to provide best-in-class student accommodation. Once finalised, the building will offer 782 PBSA bedrooms, along with a range of extensive social, study, and wellbeing amenities. These facilities will include private dining rooms, a gym, wellness spaces, TV lounges, shared entertainment areas, and a roof terrace that features panoramic views of London’s iconic skyline.
Community Impact and Cultural Significance
A notable aspect of the development is its provision for the Migration Museum, which will be the first permanent home for this cultural institution. The museum, secured through a 60-year lease, will offer a free-to-enter, purpose-built space that supports its long-term presence in the city. This integration of cultural and educational elements underscores the project’s commitment to enhancing community engagement.
Sustainability Initiatives
With sustainability as a core focus, the 65 Crutched Friars development is targeting a BREEAM Outstanding rating. It incorporates energy-efficient systems, including solar panels and air source heat pumps, which contribute to a low-carbon design approach. This commitment to environmental responsibility aligns with the growing demand for sustainable living solutions in the UK PBSA market.
Timeline and Operational Plans
The construction is progressing towards practical completion anticipated in 2027, with plans to welcome students for the 2027/2028 academic year. The PBSA will be operated under Dominus’ new student brand and management platform, set to launch later in 2026. This strategic move reflects the company’s aim to enhance the student living experience while ensuring operational excellence.
