Plans have emerged for a significant redevelopment on St George’s Road in Glasgow, where buildings currently housing the Q Club Snooker Club, Pure Gym, and various offices may soon be demolished to make way for new student accommodation. If approved by Glasgow City Council, this project will introduce a modern and purpose-built student housing complex to the area.
Details of the Proposed Development
The site located at 93 to 113 St George’s Road aims to provide 314 student bedrooms, comprising a mixture of studio flats designed for modern student living. The typical studio layout will feature an area of approximately 18.5 square metres, equipped with a double bed, kitchenette, en suite bathroom, cupboard space, and a versatile desk or sofa area. Moreover, the development plans include a lobby, yoga studio, gym, lounges, and study rooms to enhance the living experience for students.
Retention of Historic Elements
In an effort to maintain some historical elements of the site, the proposal includes plans to retain the façade of St George’s Studios. This approach not only respects the architectural heritage of the area but also allows for a seamless integration of new and old structures. The design statement submitted as part of the planning application articulates that the redevelopment will breathe new life into a site currently occupied by buildings deemed unsuitable for adaptation.
Community and Economic Impact
The proposed student accommodation will not only provide much-needed housing for students but also contribute to the local economy by creating new jobs during the construction phase and beyond. Additionally, the new commercial unit planned for the ground floor is set to enhance community engagement and provide essential services to both residents and students alike. The planning application has been submitted by Albert Investment Co (Commercial) Ltd and is awaiting consideration from Glasgow City Council.
