Oliver Hind, a prominent construction firm and developer, has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of the £10.5 million Old School purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) project located on Ilkeston Road in Nottingham. This noteworthy scheme was financed through a Design and Build Contract with Paragon Bank, highlighting the increasing investment in the UK PBSA market.
Project Overview
Designed by Franklin Ellis Architects, the Old School development is a remarkable conversion of a Victorian school that had remained vacant for over 12 years. The transformation encompasses the refurbishment of the existing school structure, an extension on the former playground, and the construction of a new gatehouse building. This initiative has successfully created a total of 181 student accommodation units, which is a critical addition to the housing options available for students in Nottingham.
Challenges and Innovations
Oliver Hind expressed their satisfaction in delivering this prestigious project, noting the complexity involved in the conversion process. The project faced numerous challenges, particularly with structural modifications that required innovative solutions, such as the insertion of additional mezzanine floors. This strategic approach not only maximised the use of space but also enhanced the overall floor area, effectively splitting the previously high ceilings of the school hall.
