Greystar has acquired two purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) assets in Spain from Straco Real Estate, strengthening its position in one of Europe's most supply-constrained student housing markets.

The assets are located in Salamanca and Valencia, two of Spain's leading university cities. Together they add approximately 1,600 beds to Greystar's Spanish portfolio, which now totals around 3,000 beds nationwide.

Market context

The Spanish PBSA market continues to attract institutional investors because of a structural imbalance between student housing supply and demand. Greystar said the acquired assets meet high sustainability standards.

Canvas brand

The properties will operate under Canvas, Greystar's pan-European brand for students and young professionals, which launched in 2021.

Advisers

Jones Day advised Greystar on the transaction through a multidisciplinary Madrid team led by real estate partner Javier Muñoz Méndez, with support from Raimundo Ortega (competition), Blanca Puyol (corporate), Vidal Galindo (employment), Luis López Claver (real estate counsel), Ángel Magdaleno (urban planning counsel), and Javier Gutiérrez (employment counsel).

Straco Real Estate sold the portfolio as vendor. Greystar described the deal as reinforcing its growth trajectory in European PBSA markets as student enrolment rises and housing shortages persist in major university cities.

Leaders League reported the acquisition on 21 April 2026.
