Alumno, representing Invesco Real Estate, has achieved a significant milestone by topping out the £29 million Moss Lane East purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) development for The Canvas Building in Manchester. The topping out ceremony was attended by key members of the Alumno team, the main contractor GMI Construction Group, and various stakeholders from the wider project team. This development is anticipated to be completed in time for the 2027 academic year, ensuring students have access to modern living spaces in a prime location.
The Vision for Moss Lane East
The Moss Lane East site has been strategically chosen for its proximity to major educational institutions, specifically the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University. This makes it an appealing choice for students seeking convenient accommodation. The building is designed by the esteemed Stallan Brand Architects, featuring a blend of cluster bedrooms and single-occupancy studio apartments, amounting to a total of 261 student beds, catering to the diverse needs of Manchester’s student population.
Design and Community Engagement
David Campbell, Managing Director of Alumno, expressed pride in reaching the topping out stage, highlighting it as a testament to the hard work and collaboration of all involved. He emphasised the importance of delivering a development that not only meets the demands of students but also contributes positively to the local community. Campbell noted that the project includes a proportion of affordable rooms, addressing the pressing need for high-quality, accessible accommodation in Manchester.
This innovative scheme overlooks Whitworth Park and features a striking nine-storey building alongside the sensitive refurbishment of a listed Georgian villa. This thoughtful integration of modern architecture with the preservation of local heritage aims to create a harmonious relationship between the new development and its surroundings. The building’s exterior, which utilises a combination of brick and metal cladding, complements the architectural character of the area.
Amenities and Supportive Living Environment
Students living at Moss Lane East will benefit from a variety of amenities designed to enhance their living experience. Facilities will include dedicated study and collaborative workspaces, social lounges, a cinema room, fitness amenities, and a wellbeing space, all aimed at fostering a vibrant and supportive living environment. These features are essential for creating a community where students can thrive academically and socially.
Phillip Johnson, Regional Director for the North West at GMI Construction Group, highlighted the significance of reaching this development milestone and the collaborative efforts of the entire project team. He remarked on the rewarding nature of witnessing the project’s vision come to life and expressed excitement about contributing to a development that will positively impact the local area and provide quality accommodation for future generations of students.
